Why Hospice?

Hospice of Cumberland County offers comfort and care when a cure is no longer possible. Our goal is for the terminally ill to spend their final days with dignity, with as much comfort as possible, surrounded by their loved ones. Hospice affirms life and regards dying as a normal process. Hospice of Cumberland County seeks to improve the patient’s quality of life by focusing on physical symptoms, and well as emotional, social, and spiritual needs, while at the same time providing a support system to the patients family.

Hospice of Cumberland County respects patients’ need for control over their own lives, so patients and families are included in all decisions related to the patient’s care.

Hospice staff members are experts in state-of-the-art pain management. Most treatments needed to make a terminally ill patient physically comfortable can be provided in the home. In the rare cases when symptoms cannot be controlled at home, transfer to an inpatient facility is available.

Who is eligible to receive hospice care?

Patients with a life expectancy of six months or less. The patient’s doctor and the hospice medical director use their best clinical judgment to certify the patient has a life expectancy of six months or less, if the disease runs it’s normal course. Sometimes patients live longer than six months and continue to receive care from Hospice of Cumberland County.

Patients who agree to forgo curative treatment. Hospice patients focus on comfort measures, pain management, and quality of their remaining days. Patients can discontinue hospice care at any time.

What does it cost?

As a private, non-profit organization, Hospice of Cumberland County never denies care because of a patient’s inability to pay. Medicare recipients have 100% coverage for hospice care. Hospice care is also reimbursed under TennCare and essentially all private insurances.

Patients can be referred by a physician, family member, social worker, or care manager. All referrals will be evaluated to determine whether hospice care is appropriate by consultation with the primary care physician.
